Government College Kariavattom

Our institution was established as a constituent part of University College, Thiruvananthapuram in 1993-1994, with minimal infrastructural facilities. Later in 1997, it was renamed as Government College, Kariavattom. 

The College possesses 15 acres of land and is situated 14 km from Trivandrum Central, towards north at Kariavattom. It is located within the Kazhakuttom ward of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation and is the only Government College within the limits of Kazhakoottam constituency. The institution is in close proximity to the academic campus of University of Kerala, Technopark, and the Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education (LNCPE). Digital University and other central government research institutions are well within the range of our college. 

This institution was established with Arts subject courses of under-graduate wing of University College, Thiruvananthapuram in 1993-1994, with minimum infrastructural facilities. During 1996-97 all undergraduate courses were shifted back to University College Thiruvananthapuram. In the meanwhile, courses in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Computer Science and Statistics were introduced at the undergraduate level and the college was renamed as Government College, Kariavattom in 1997. Botany, Zoology, Chemistry and Mathematics were offered as complementary courses. Subsequently in 1998 Geography at the undergraduate level was introduced and in the year 1999 -2000, two restructured double main semester courses, namely Physics & Computer Application and Chemistry & Industrial Chemistry were introduced at the undergraduate level.

The college was upgraded to Postgraduate level by introducing M.Sc. Physics in 2012 and M.Sc. Mathematics in 2018. The Postgraduate Department of Physics became a recognized Research Center under University of Kerala in 2021.

Currently there are eight major departments (Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geography, Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics) and six minor departments (Botany, English, Geology, Languages- Malayalam, Hindi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Arabic and French, Physical Education and Zoology). There are 700+ students and 55 teaching faculties out of which 9 are recognised research guides. There are 24 non-teaching staff members including the Principal for handling administrative duties of the college and 12 lab attenders. 

Socially and economically backward students are supported by various Schemes and Scholarships including Post Matric Minorities Scheme, Suvarna Jubilee Scholarship, State Merit Scholarship, District Merit Scholarship, C H Muhammed Koya Scholarship, Higher Education Scholarship, Research Award –Aspire, Snehapoorvam Scholarship, Prof. Joseph Mundasseri Scholarship and Hindi Scholarship.  

The institution was NAAC accredited with B-grade (2.47 score) in 2016. The quiet ambience and pollution free surroundings provide a peaceful environment to the students.
