The College is situated 14 kms from Trivandrum Central, towards north at Kariavattom junction. The approach road of the college within a distance of 500m connects NH 47 at Kariavattom junction. The college is within the Kazhakuttom ward of Trivandrum corporation. This is the only one Government College within the limits of Kazhakuttom Assembly .On the west and south sides of the college is the campus of Kerala University and Technopark, and on the northern side adjacent to the college is the Lekshmi Bhai National College of Physical Education.
This institution was established with Arts subject courses of under-graduate wing of University College, Thiruvananthapuram in 1993-1994, with minimum infrastructural facilities. During 1996-97 all under graduate courses were shifted back to University College Thiruvananthapuram. In the meanwhile, courses in Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Computer Science and statistics were introduced at the undergraduate level and the college has been renamed as Government College, Kariavattom in 1997. Botany, Zoology, Chemistry and Mathematics are the other subjects in the above courses. Subsequently in 1998 Geography at the undergraduate level was introduced and in the year 1999 -2000, two restructured double main semester courses, namely Physics & Computer Application and Chemistry & Industrial Chemistry were introduced at the undergraduate level.
Geology and Statistics were introduced as subsidiary subjects for Geography. The College possesses 15 acres of land. Construction of additional blocks and expansion of laboratories and class rooms for present and future needs are going on. In general, the courses run by this college are the first of its kind in this state and are having demand and job prospects.
